Camino Photo of the Day: Layers of the Onion

This is one of the reasons I love Spain’s churches so much. To orient you, you’re standing in the middle of the nave of Santa María de Viana, looking down the north transept to a side chapel – and there were many side chapels. If you look up above the chapel, you can see the original Gothic walls and window. In the 17th and 18th Century, in the process of making repairs to the then 300-year old church, they simply built new walls outside of the old ones. You can literally see the layers of history peeled back in front of you.

On a personal note, today, the 17th of December, is my 50th birthday. There’s hardly a day goes by that something or another doesn’t ache, but for all that I don’t feel old, or middle-aged, whatever this is supposed to be.

I feel like it’s time to start planning the next adventure.
