Fletch, Nyneva, and Sondra struck out on their own (with the ever redoubtable Doreen) to check out the road untraveled – the other fork from the ogre cave. They found another abandoned mine, though this one delivered quite a bite.

Turns out a fellow named Garnick rode into Frandor Keep mounted on Kailan’s horse. He swears he doesn’t know what happened to Rolando, and could you please tell me what year it is? Further attempts to track down Rolando ended in a brief to-do with an innocent Dryad.

Then, back into the forest and back into the spiders. The group met up with the mother of all spiders, persuading her to withdraw by means of oil and fire.

GM notes:

Having the better part of a day to kill in Frandor’s Keep, Rue attempted to string and shoot the impossible bow. The story of his failure, and of the coppers made by some in the party selling “Rat on a Stick” should be left of others. (Fletch? Nyneva? Kailan??)

The next day, the party set out for the forest for to find a missing gem. What they found, however, was a nest of giant spiders with poisonous bites and mad-quick moves.

While several party members were poisoned, only brave Liam* succumbed to poison hip deep in a cold stream, while Dumbarton Oaks gently sung him to his sleep.

Rolando, meanwhile, had taken Kailan’s horse back to the keep to see if he could find anti-venom. Somewhere on the road, horse and rider vanished.

* the fact that Liam was at the back of the party has no bearing on his bravery.

Following the great haul of ogre treasure, Kailan took instruction from the innkeep of the Tilted Keg. Battered and bruised, he is now second level.

Then the party went to make good their claim. While trying to map out the mazy mine in the basement, they were ambushed by kobolds. A half-orc leading them challenged “the champion”, so Sondra killed him. [Best mulligan ever: critical failure to critical hit with multiple penetration dice. Ouch.]

There was lots of mud, and a rotting chest of ancient treasure. I wonder where the kobolds got it?

The group encountered a Roper, which was clearly going to slaughter them until Rue pulled out one of the magic arrows the group had found back in Session 5. It hit its target with a clap of thunder, distracting the beastie long enough that an escape could be made.

The characters plundered the diggings of the orkin bandits, then headed back to Frandor’s Keep to heal up and divest themselves of some of the loot. They also uncovered some more information that may or may not be related to the counterfeiting crisis at Frandor.

In the keep, they contracted with the High Cleric Relgus Banthor to raise Dumbarton Oaks from the dead. This he did, though at what cost?

The late Dumbarton Oaks

GM notes:

The characters fought an organized (!) goblin patrol, commanded by an orc, and did pretty well. Serious injuries to the fighters required some days rest at Frandor Keep. Gronger Fest began at the keep.

In the special, extended second part of the session, the characters (except Fletch, for mysterious reasons that I will discuss with Mel later) went back down the road they were exploring, to find an abandoned mine high on a hillside. Following Sondra’s advice, they charged up the hill at a company of well-organized orcs. This nearly resulted in our first total party kill.

Of the heroism of the pixie-fairy Dumbarton Oaks, I will let others tell.

Eventually, with all the fighters bleeding out and Dumbarton Oaks cut neatly in twain, their vicious half-orc leader Hezbuluch was finally brought down by a combination of a cleric and a pair of thieves.

On further reading after the fact, I believe we might have had a few more character deaths. A single hit that takes a character from conscious to -4 kills them instantly; no bleeding-out is required. We will know this for next time (cue sinister laughter).

I also did not handle fumbles and mishaps correctly. This will be fixed in future sessions.

Temporal honor adjustments are now being handled in-game. We will adjust permanent Honor (and discuss Honor dice) at the start of the next session.
