Pyramid
The Pyramid near Porta Portese. (It's also right in front of the Protestant cemetary, but that's a later day...) Note the cars for scale.

Trastevere Grafitti
Rome has had a problem with grafitti since the ancient Republic. Nowadays they don't carve so much as paint, which is much easier to cover over. The sentiments don't really change, only the names.

Approaching the Vatican
We're still blocks away from Piazza San Pietro at this point. The Vatican walls can be seen on the right.

Piazza San Pietro
My first view of the Piazza San Pietro, Bernini's architectural masterpiece. It really does feel like the colonnades are hugging the piazza. Francine takes one look at the crowd and ventures her opinion.

Tributes
Every fountain or lamp post became a shrine. When they were full, monuments were created in the open space.

The Long Wait
Everywhere in Rome, we saw the banners: pace, peace.

Candles and Flags

Cardinals
The Cardinals process into St. Peter's. My view would improve rapidly as the people in front of me tried to leave the piazza. The fools.
