The Lord appeared to us then as the solid rock on which we wanted to \u2018build our house.\u2019 We knew that He alone has the promises of eternal life and that none of those promises is empty&#8230;.<\/p><p>Let us recall to mind often the promises of our Oblation, in order to maintain or to reestablish the harmony between our actions and the divine will. <em>Dominus exspectat quotidie &#8230;<\/em> \u2018The Lord is waiting every day for us to respond by our works to His holy lessons.\u2019<\/p><cite>(Commentary for Benedictine Oblates, Prologue)<br \/><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I am also required to pray some form of the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thomryng.com\/amateurmonk\/review-monastic-diurnal-at-one-year\/\" target=\"_blank\">Liturgy of the Hours<\/a> and to practice <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lectio_Divina\" target=\"_blank\">Lectio Divina<\/a><\/em>. For this is the charism of the monk, amateur or otherwise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although my spiritual life is grounded in the <em>Breviary<\/em> and the <em>Rule<\/em>, its foundation is the Holy Scriptures and the Sacred Liturgy. Of course, the <em>Breviary<\/em> is a liturgy in itself, and the <em>Rule<\/em> nothing more than Saint Benedict&#8217;s guide for living the Scriptures and Tradition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In today&#8217;s reading from the <em>Rule<\/em>, we hear of the profound responsibilities of the Abbot:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">L<\/span>et<\/em> <em>the Abbot always bear in mind<\/em> that he must give an account in the dread judgment of God of both his own teaching and of the obedience of his disciples. And let the Abbot know that whatever lack of profit the master of the house shall find in the sheep, will be laid to the blame of the shepherd.\u00a0On the other hand he will be blameless, if he gave all a shepherd\u2019s care to his restless and unruly flock, and took all pains to correct their corrupt manners&#8230;.<\/p><cite>(Holy Rule of Saint Benedict, Chapter 2)<br \/><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is something that everyone who is responsible for the spiritual welfare of another must internalize. You will be called to account. Whether you are an abbot, a bishop, a father or mother, a teacher, you will be called to account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is something I think about in my capacities as a catechist and a leader of altar servers, in addition to being a father and husband. I will be called to account. I am well aware of my many faults, of my pride and prevarication, and I pray that the master of the house have mercy on me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">O<\/span> holy Father, Saint Benedict,<\/em><br \/>blessed by God both in grace and in name,<br \/>who, while standing in prayer, with hands raised to heaven,<br \/>didst most happily yield thy angelic spirit<br \/>into the hands of thy Creator,<br \/>and hast promised zealously to defend<br \/>against all the snares of the enemy<br \/>in the last struggle of death,<br \/>those who shall daily remind thee<br \/>of thy glorious departure and heavenly joys;<br \/>protect me, I beseech thee, O glorious Father,<br \/>this day and every day, by thy holy blessings,<br \/>that I may never be separated<br \/>from our dear Lord,<br \/>and from the society of thyself,<br \/>and of all the blessed.<\/p><p>Through the same Christ our Lord.<\/p><p>Amen.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Saint Benedict.
