The first apostle called by Christ, who told him and his brother, Simon, to &#8220;Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the Resurrection, Andrew preached along the coasts of the Black Sea, both north and south, founding churches that included one in the little town of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Byzantium\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Byzantium<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His missionary journeys possibly ranged as far as <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dacia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dacia<\/a> to the west and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roman_Georgia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Georgia<\/a> to the east. Something of an irony, since this year at least his is also the last feast of the liturgical year, before the new year begins with first Vespers of the First Sunday of Advent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Saint Andrew has somehow become the patron saint of Scotland, Ukraine, Russia, Sicily, Greece, Cyprus, Romania, Patras (naturally), Manila, Amalfi, Prussia, and the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, as well as among fishermen, fishmongers, and rope-makers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today he is celebrated in all of these places (and presumably by the fishermen, fishmongers, and rope-makers as well). Why that is, I suppose we&#8217;ll find out in heaven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Given the wobbly time for the start of Advent, Andrew&#8217;s feast is either the first or last major feast of the liturgical year. There&#8217;s some poetry there, I suppose. The last will be first, and the first will be last.
