It appears in the three synoptic Gospels (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Matthew 17:1\u20139 (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew+17%3A1%E2%80%939&amp;version=RSVCE\" target=\"_blank\">Matthew 17:1\u20139<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Mark 9:2\u20138 (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Mark+9%3A2%E2%80%938&amp;version=RSVCE\" target=\"_blank\">Mark 9:2\u20138<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Luke 9:28\u201336 (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Luke+9%3A28%E2%80%9336&amp;version=RSVCE\" target=\"_blank\">Luke 9:28\u201336<\/a>). Two of the witnesses refer to it in their writings, but they do not tell the story (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"2 Peter 1:16\u201318 (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=2+Peter+1%3A16%E2%80%9318&amp;version=RSVCE\" target=\"_blank\">2 Peter 1:16\u201318<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John+1%3A14&amp;version=RSVCE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"John 1:14 (opens in a new tab)\">John 1:14<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let&#8217;s walk through Saint Luke&#8217;s telling, which is the Gospel for the feast <a href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/080622.cfm\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/080622.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this year<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-default is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">J<\/span>esus took Peter, John, and James&nbsp; <br \/><\/em>and went up a mountain to pray.<br \/>While he was praying his face changed in appearance&nbsp;<br \/>and his clothing became dazzling white.<br \/>And behold, two men were conversing with him, Moses and Elijah,&nbsp;<br \/>who appeared in glory and spoke of his exodus&nbsp;<br \/>that he was going to accomplish in Jerusalem.<br \/>Peter and his companions had been overcome by sleep,&nbsp;<br \/>but becoming fully awake,&nbsp;<br \/>they saw his glory and the two men standing with him.<br \/>As they were about to part from him, Peter said to Jesus,&nbsp;<br \/>\u201cMaster, it is good that we are here;<br \/>let us make three tents,<br \/>one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.\u201d<br \/>But he did not know what he was saying.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Law and the Prophets in the persons of Moses and Elijah are seen to be fulfilled in Jesus. Exhausted from their climb up the mountain, the Apostles are jolted awake. Peter gibbers, but he makes an effort to find some way to honour them all. James and John, those &#8220;sons of thunder&#8221;, are merely thunderstruck it appears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-default is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Then a cloud came, casting a shadow over them;<br \/>While he was still speaking,&nbsp;<br \/>a cloud came and cast a shadow over them,<br \/>and they became frightened when they entered the cloud.<br \/>Then from the cloud came a voice that said,&nbsp;<br \/>\u201cThis is my chosen Son; listen to him.\u201d<br \/>After the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone.<br \/>They fell silent and did not at that time&nbsp;<br \/>tell anyone what they had seen.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As at His baptism by John, Jesus&#8217; identity is confirmed by God the Father. If the apostles were terrified before, I can only imagine their state of mind now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then&#8230; silence. The flash and bang were gone. The ghostly figures were gone. The Apostles stood at the mountain top, alone with the Lord. Moreover, we possess the prophetic message that is altogether reliable. You will do well to be attentive to it, as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.<\/p><p>(2 Peter 1:16-19)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No recorded words have survived from the second witness, Saint James.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We conclude, as does sacred scripture itself, with Saint John, the third witness. Near the end of the magnificent prologue to his Gospel, we have his testimony in passing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-default is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">A<\/span>nd the Word became flesh<\/em> and made his dwelling among us, and we saw his glory, the glory as of the Father\u2019s only Son, full of grace and truth.<\/p><p>(John 1:14)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And amen to that!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today we celebrate the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord, one of the more important (if sometimes overlooked) feasts of the liturgical year.
