Tradition holds that he was one of those who left Christ when he preached on the Bread of Life (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John+6%3A44-6%3A66&amp;version=RSVCE\" target=\"_blank\">John 6:44-6:66<\/a>). Saint Peter brought him back to the faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He traveled with Paul and Barnabas, who thought him unreliable (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Acts+15%3A37-41&amp;version=RSVCE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Acts 15:37-41<\/a>). Again he left, again he came back (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=2+Timothy+4%3A11&amp;version=RSVCE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2 Timothy 4:11<\/a>). He was martyred about the year 68.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If Saint Mark&#8217;s story is one of some serious ups and downs, the story of his corpse is no less so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In AD 828, pirates under the pay of the Venetian government stole his bones from their resting place in Alexandria. Pursued by the constables, in their haste they left his head behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" height=\"444\" width=\"860\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thomryng.com\/amateurmonk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/anonymous_war_flag_of_venice_1-2429px.png?resize=860%2C444\" alt=\"This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is anonymous_war_flag_of_venice_1-2429px-1024x529.png\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With most of the Evangelist in their possession, they hurried back to Venice. Saint Mark became patron saint of the Venetian Republic. For centuries, Venice&#8217;s flag bore the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lion_of_St_Mark\" target=\"_blank\">lion of Saint Mark<\/a>. And when Napoleon&#8217;s invaders ended the Republic, it was not &#8220;viva la repubblica&#8221; that the people shouted against the invader, but &#8220;viva San Marco!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pope Saint Paul VI returned the Saint&#8217;s relics to the church in Alexandria in 1968, and for the first time in more than a thousand years, Mark&#8217;s body was all together<span id='easy-footnote-1-107762' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.thomryng.com\/amateurmonk\/saint-mark-the-evangelist-2023\/#easy-footnote-bottom-1-107762' title='Well, more or less. There are still some scattered bits &amp;#8211; slivers, really &amp;#8211; in Venice and in other places.'><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One wonders what he thought of that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Traditionally on this day, the Church would celebrate the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ccwatershed.org\/2021\/04\/25\/the-greater-litanies-the-meaning-of-liturgical-processions\/\" target=\"_blank\">Greater Litanies<\/a>.
