H<\/span>appy (almost) New Year! Holy Mother Church gives us prayers and devotions to help ring in the New Year right! Yes, the liturgical year began back on November 30th with first Vespers of the first Sunday of Advent, but even so, there are Catholic ways to keep the civil new year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And let’s not forget that Pope Francis has proclaimed a jubilee<\/a>, which began on Christmas Eve! Our local Catholic magazine, Northwest Catholic<\/a>, has a good article on the jubilee year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The theme of the Holy Year is \u201cPilgrims of Hope.\u201d The papal bull, issued May 9, that introduced the coming Jubilee Year is titled \u201cSpes Non Confundit,\u201d or \u201cHope does not disappoint,\u201d drawn from Romans 5:5. \u201cEveryone knows what it is to hope,\u201d Pope Francis wrote. \u201cIn the heart of each person, hope dwells as the desire and expectation of good things to come, despite our not knowing what the future may bring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEven so, uncertainty about the future may at times give rise to conflicting feelings, ranging from confident trust to apprehensiveness, from serenity to anxiety, from firm conviction to hesitation and doubt,\u201d he continued. \u201cOften we come across people who are discouraged, pessimistic and cynical about the future, as if nothing could possibly bring them happiness. For all of us, may the Jubilee be an opportunity to be renewed in hope. God\u2019s word helps us find reasons for that hope.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pope Francis also hopes the year draws Catholics toward patience, which he described in \u201cSpes Non Confundit\u201d as a \u201cvirtue closely linked to hope,\u201d yet can feel elusive in \u201cour fast-paced world, we are used to wanting everything now.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

So, how shall we start the year? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Attend Mass!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Remember that New Year’s Day is also the Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God<\/a>. This is the Octave day of Christmas and a holy day of obligation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So get thee to a Mass! Here in Tacoma, there are numerous options available, both on the Vigil (tonight) and on the Day. My own parish of Saint Patrick will celebrate a 9 AM Mass tomorrow morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sing or Say the Te Deum<\/em> on New Year’s Eve<\/h3>\n\n\n
