T<\/span>his is the latest installment in a series of short articles<\/a> I wrote\/adapted\/edited for my parish bulletin. I will publish the others as they they appear.<\/p>\n

The new Mass translation is coming in Advent! Back in 2000, Blessed Pope John Paul II issued the third edition of the Roman Missal<\/em>. After more than ten years of consultation and work, the new English translation is finally ready. Let\u2019s start in on the first part of the Creed:<\/p>\n

I<\/strong> believe in one God,
\nthe Father almighty,
\nmaker of heaven and earth,
\nof all things visible and invisible<\/strong>.
\nI believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,
\nthe Only Begotten Son of God,
\nborn of the Father before all ages.<\/strong>
\nGod from God, Light from Light,
\ntrue God from true God,
\nbegotten, not made, consubstantial<\/strong> with the Father;
\nthrough him all things were made.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

"Credo" by Emmanuel Fr\u00e9miet<\/p><\/div>The first major change is hard to miss: the Creed now says \u201cI believe\u201d instead of \u201cWe believe.\u201d \u201cI believe\u201d is a straightforward translation of the Latin, which begins Credo in unum Deum<\/em> (I believe in one God). The Catechism of the Catholic Church <\/em>says \u201cWhoever says \u2018I believe\u2019 says \u2018I pledge myself to what we believe\u2019\u201d (no. 185). <\/p>\n

We will now say \u201cinvisible\u201d not just \u201cunseen\u201d. The use of the word \u201cinvisible\u201d helps clarify what we are referring to: the entire spiritual order of angels and of the human soul. These things are not only \u201cunseen\u201d but are not capable of being seen. <\/p>\n

The new translation recovers Christ\u2019s ancient title, \u201cOnly Begotten Son\u201d (Fili Unigenite<\/em>), which we also saw in the Gloria<\/em>. To say the Son is \u201cborn of the Father before all ages\u201d is a profound theological truth, for the Son is not \u201cborn\u201d in the human sense of beginning one\u2019s life, but eternally proceeds from the Father while being always fully God.<\/p>\n

\u201cConsubstantial\u201d (consubstanti\u00e1lem<\/em> in Latin) is not a word we use in normal conversation. However, it is an important theological term, asserting that the Son is of the \u201csame substance\u201d as the Father \u2013 meaning He equally shares the Father\u2019s divinity as a Person of the Holy Trinity. He is not of a different substance; He is not of a lesser substance; He has always existed. As Saint Athanasius<\/a> summed it up, \u201cthere was never a time when he was not\u201d.<\/p>\n

While \u201cconsubstantial\u201d may sound technical, the word \u201cbeing\u201d used in the old translation was considered too vague to properly express the theology and significance of the original Latin. One advantage of the word \u201cconsubstantial\u201d is that it reminds us that there is something about the inner life of God that is beyond our normal terminology.<\/p>\n
