T<\/span>his is the latest installment in a series of short articles<\/a> I wrote\/adapted\/edited for my parish bulletin. I will publish the others as they they appear.<\/p>\n

The new Mass translation is coming in Advent! Back in 2000, Blessed Pope John Paul II issued the third edition of the Roman Missal. After more than ten years of consultation and work, the new English translation is finally ready. <\/p>\n

Here is the new translation of the second part of the Creed:<\/p>\n

For us men and for our salvation
\nhe came down from heaven,
\nand by the Holy Spirit was incarnate<\/strong> of the Virgin Mary,
\nand became man.<\/p>\n

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate,
\nhe suffered death<\/strong> and was buried,
\nand rose again on the third day
\nin accordance with the Scriptures<\/strong>.
\nHe ascended into heaven
\nand is seated at the right hand of the Father.
\nHe will come again in glory
\nto judge the living and the dead
\nand his kingdom will have no end.<\/p>\n

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
\nwho proceeds from the Father and the Son,
\nwho with the Father and the Son is adored<\/strong> and glorified,
\nwho<\/strong> has spoken through the prophets.<\/p>\n

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.
\nI confess<\/strong> one baptism for the forgiveness of sins
\nand I look forward<\/strong> to the resurrection of the dead
\nand the life of the world to come. Amen. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\"\"<\/a>The simple change from \u201cborn\u201d to \u201cincarnate\u201d is one of the most important improvements in the new translation of the Creed, because it more accurately conveys the truth of the Incarnation \u2013 the moment when the Son of God took flesh.<\/p>\n

The old wording could be interpreted to mean that Christ did not actually become man until the moment He was born. Of course, the reality is that the Son of God took on human nature from the moment of His conception. The Blessed Virgin Mary\u2019s \u201cyes\u201d to the Archangel Gabriel at the Annunciation is the moment when the Son first \u201ccame down from heaven\u201d to dwell among us. In using the term, \u201cincarnate,\u201d the new translation removes all ambiguity.<\/p>\n

The significance of this line is emphasized by the fact that we bow while saying it, as an expression of reverence to the mystery of the Incarnation.<\/p>\n

There are a handful of other changes in the new translation of the Creed. Describing the Resurrection as being \u201cin accordance with the Scriptures\u201d speaks inclusively of the New Testament, in addition to \u201cfulfillment\u201d of Old Testament prophecy. <\/p>\n

\u201cI confess one baptism\u201d carries more conviction than \u201cacknowledge\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cI look forward to the resurrection of the dead,\u201d reflects a sincere desire, rather than just \u201clooking for\u201d the resurrection. The original Latin exspecto<\/em> conveys a sense of anxious waiting and expectation.<\/p>\n
