T<\/span>his is one in a series of short articles<\/a> I wrote\/adapted\/edited for my parish bulletin. <\/p>\n

The new Mass translation is coming! Back in 2000, Blessed Pope John Paul II issued the third edition of the Roman Missal<\/em>. After more than ten years of consultation and work, the new English translation is finally ready.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>At every Mass, the priest repeats the words of consecration by which Christ instituted the Holy Eucharist at the Last Supper, and by which the bread and wine become the true Body and Blood of Christ.<\/p>\n

Take this, all of you, and eat of it,
\nfor this is my Body,
\nwhich will be given up for you.<\/p>\n

Take this, all of you, and drink from it,
\nfor this is the chalice of my Blood,
\nthe Blood of the new and eternal covenant,
\nwhich will be poured out for you and for many<\/strong>
\nfor the forgiveness of sins.
\nDo this in memory of me.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

One significant change is the revision of the current phrase, \u201cshed for you and for all so that sins may be forgiven,\u201d to \u201cpoured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.\u201d The imagery of Blood being \u201cpoured out\u201d is much more vivid than \u201cshed\u201d \u2013 it portrays His Blood as true drink (Jn 6:55) and reminds us that Jesus entirely emptied Himself (Phil 2:7) out of love for us.<\/p>\n

Another change is the replacement of \u201cfor all\u201d with \u201cfor many.\u201d \u201cFor many\u201d is a faithful translation of the original Latin pro multis<\/em>. Isaiah 53:12 prophesied that the Messiah would take away \u201cthe sins of many,\u201d and Christ Himself also said His Blood would be shed for \u201cmany\u201d (Mt 26:28, Mk 14:24). <\/p>\n

Christ died for the sake of all humanity, but this phrase reminds us that each individual must also accept the grace won by Christ in order to attain eternal life. The recovery of the wording, \u201cfor many,\u201d is a sober reminder that salvation is not automatic.<\/p>\n

After the consecration, the priest will simply announce \u201cThe mystery of faith\u201d (Mysterium fidei<\/em>). In response, we make one of these acclamations:<\/p>\n

We proclaim your Death, O Lord,
\nand profess your Resurrection
\nuntil you come again.<\/p>\n

When we eat this Bread and drink this Cup,
\nwe proclaim your Death, O Lord,
\nuntil you come again.<\/p>\n

Save us, Savior of the world,
\nfor by your Cross and Resurrection
\nyou have set us free.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

All three are rooted in Scripture (1 Cor 11:26, Jn 4:42) and directly address Christ made present in the Blessed Sacrament, speaking of our relationship with Him.<\/p>\n
