In this guise, Mary is known as the Mother of Sorrows <em>(Mater Dolorosa<\/em>, or just <em>Dolorosa<\/em>). <\/p>\n<p>Though this commemoration is not on the &#8220;reformed calendar&#8221;, interestingly the following <a href=\"http:\/\/fatherdirector.blogspot.com\/2012\/03\/lenten-devotion-to-our-lady-restored.html\" target=\"_blank\">alternative Collect<\/a> is provided for Friday in the fifth week of Lent, thanks to a restoration by Pope John Paul II:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>O God, who in this season<br \/>\n    give your Church the grace<br \/>\n    to imitate devoutly the Blessed Virgin Mary<br \/>\n    in contemplating the Passion of Christ,<br \/>\n    grant, we pray, through her intercession,<br \/>\n    that we may cling more firmly each day<br \/>\n    to your Only Begotten Son<br \/>\n    and come at last to the fullness of grace.<\/p>\n<p>    Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.<\/p>\n<p>    Amen.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And what, exactly are the seven sorrows of Mary?<\/p>\n<p>The Seven Sorrows are events in the life of the Blessed Virgin Mary. They are frequently depicted in art, particularly of the Middle Ages.<\/p>\n<p>They are often used as a meditational devotion, where you pray one Our Father and seven Hail Marys for each.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The Prophecy of Simeon.<br \/>\n(Luke 2:34-35)<\/li>\n<li>The Flight into Egypt.<br \/>\n(Matthew 2:13)<\/li>\n<li>The Loss of the Child Jesus in the Temple.<br \/>\n(Luke 2:43-45)<\/li>\n<li>Mary Meets Jesus on the Way to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stations_of_the_Cross\" target=\"_blank\">Calvary<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Jesus Dies on the Cross.<br \/>\n(John 19:25)<\/li>\n<li>Mary Receives the Body of Jesus in Her Arms.<br \/>\n(Matthew 27:57-59)<\/li>\n<li>The Body of Jesus Is Placed in the Tomb.<br \/>\n(John 19:40-42)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Whether or not you pray this devotion, it seems to me that these are good things on which to meditate at this stage of our Lenten pilgrimage.
