Exult, let them exult, the hosts of heaven,
\ne<\/span>xult, let Angel ministers of God exult,
\nlet the trumpet of salvation sound aloud our mighty King\u2019s triumph!
\nBe glad, let earth be glad, as glory floods her,
\nablaze with light from her eternal King,
\nlet all corners of the earth be glad,
\nknowing an end to gloom and darkness.
\nRejoice, let Mother Church also rejoice,
\narrayed with the lighting of his glory,
\nlet this holy building shake with joy,
\nfilled with the mighty voices of the peoples.<\/p>\n

(Therefore, dearest friends,
\nstanding in the awesome glory of this holy light,
\ninvoke with me, I ask you, the mercy of God almighty,
\nthat he who has been pleased to number me, though unworthy, among the Levites,
\nmay pour into me his light unshadowed,
\nthat I may sing this candle\u2019s perfect praises.)<\/p>\n

(V.<\/font> The Lord be with you.
\nR.<\/font> And with your spirit.)
\nV.<\/font> Lift up your hearts.
\nR.<\/font> We lift them up to the Lord.
\nV.<\/font> Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
\nR.<\/font> It is right and just.<\/p>\n

It is truly right and just,
\nwith ardent love of mind and heart,
\nand with devoted service of our voice,
\nto acclaim our God invisible, the almighty Father,
\nand Jesus Christ, our Lord, his Son, his Only Begotten.
\nWho for our sake paid Adam\u2019s debt to the eternal Father,
\nand pouring out his own dear Blood
\nwiped clean the record of our ancient sinfulness.
\nThese then are the feasts of Passover,
\nin which is slain the Lamb, the one true Lamb,
\nwhose Blood anoints the doorposts of believers.<\/p>\n

This is the night, when once you led our forebears,
\nIsrael\u2019s children, from slavery in Egypt
\nand made them pass dry-shod through the Red Sea.
\nThis is the night that with a pillar of fire banished the darkness of sin.
\nThis is the night that even now, throughout the world,
\nsets Christian believers apart from worldly vices and from the gloom of sin,
\nlending them to grace, and joining them to his holy ones.
\nThis is the night when Christ broke the prison-bars of death,
\nand rose victorious from the underworld.
\nOur birth would have been no gain, had we not been redeemed.<\/p>\n

O wonder of your humble care for us!
\nO love, O charity beyond all telling,
\nto ransom a slave you gave away your Son!
\nO truly necessary sin of Adam, destroyed completely by the Death of Christ!
\nO happy fault that earned so great, so glorious a Redeemer!
\nO truly blessed night, worthy alone to know the time and hour
\nwhen Christ rose from the underworld!<\/p>\n

This is the night of which it is written:
\nThe night shall be as bright as day, dazzling is the night for me, and full of gladness.
\nThe sanctifying power of this night dispels all wickedness,
\nwashes faults away, restores innocence to the fallen, and joy to mourners,
\ndrives out hatred, fosters concord, and brings down the mighty.
\nOn this, your night of grace, O holy Father,
\naccept this candle, a solemn offering,
\nthe work of bees and of your servants\u2019 hands,
\nan evening sacrifice of praise, this gift from your most holy Church.<\/p>\n

But now we know the praises of this pillar,
\nwhich glowing fire ignites for God\u2019s honour,
\na fire into many flames divided,
\nyet never dimmed by sharing of its light,
\nfor it is fed by melting wax,
\ndrawn out by mother bees to build a torch so precious.<\/p>\n

O truly blessed night,
\nwhen things of heaven are wed to those of earth,
\nand divine to the human.
\nTherefore, O Lord, we pray you that this candle,
\nhallowed to the honour of your name,
\nmay persevere undimmed,
\nto overcome the darkness of this night.
\nReceive it as a pleasing fragrance,
\nand let it mingle with the lights of heaven.<\/p>\n

May this flame be found still burning by the Morning Star:
\nthe one Morning Star who never sets, Christ your Son,
\nwho coming back from death\u2019s domain
\nhas shed his peaceful light on humanity
\nand lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen<\/p>\n
