Icon of Job the Long-Suffering<\/p><\/div>\n

In the Office of Readings<\/a> for the last little bit, we’ve been reading the Book of Job<\/a>. Everybody assures us that Job was a righteous man, but we know that we are all subject to sin.<\/p>\n

I<\/span> begin to wonder if Job’s sin isn’t pride. <\/p>\n

There is some evidence in the text, but the proof, I think, is God’s rebuke to Job. From today’s reading, attend:<\/p>\n

Then from the heart of the tempest the Lord gave Job his answer. He said:<\/p>\n

Who is this obscuring my designs
\n with his empty-headed words?
\nBrace yourself like a fighter;
\n now it is my turn to ask questions and yours to inform me.
\nWhere were you when I laid the earth\u2019s foundations?
\n Tell me, since you are so well-informed!
\nWho decided the dimensions of it, do you know?
\n Or who stretched the measuring line across it?
\nWhat supports its pillars at their bases?
\n Who laid its cornerstone
\nwhen all the stars of the morning were singing with joy,
\n and the Sons of God in chorus were chanting praise?<\/p>\n

Who pent up the sea behind closed doors
\n when it leapt tumultuous out of the womb,
\nwhen I wrapped it in a robe of mist
\n and made black clouds its swaddling bands;
\nwhen I marked the bounds it was not to cross
\n and made it fast with a bolted gate?
\nCome thus far, I said, and no farther:
\n here your proud waves shall break.<\/p>\n

Have you ever in your life given orders to the morning
\n or sent the dawn to its post,
\ntelling it to grasp the earth by its edges
\n and shake the wicked out of it,
\nwhen it changes the earth to sealing clay
\n and dyes it as a man dyes clothes;
\nstealing the light from wicked men
\n and breaking the arm raised to strike?
\nHave you journeyed all the way to the sources of the sea,
\n or walked where the Abyss is deepest?
\nHave you been shown the gates of Death
\n or met the janitors of Shadowland?
\nHave you an inkling of the extent of the earth?
\n Tell me all about it if you have!
\nWhich is the way to the home of the light,
\n and where does darkness live?
\nYou could then show them the way to their proper places,
\n or put them on the path to where they live!
\nIf you know all this, you must have been born with them,
\n you must be very old by now!<\/p>\n

Have you ever visited the place where the snow is kept,
\n or seen where the hail is stored up,
\nwhich I keep for times of stress,
\n for days of battle and war?
\nFrom which direction does the lightning fork
\n when it scatters sparks over the earth?
\nWho carves a channel for the downpour,
\n and hacks a way for the rolling thunder,
\nso that rain may fall on lands where no one lives,
\n and the deserts void of human dwelling,
\ngiving drink to the lonely wastes
\n and making grass spring where everything was dry?
\nHas the rain a father?
\n Who begets the dewdrops?
\nWhat womb brings forth the ice,
\n and gives birth to the frost of heaven,
\nwhen the waters grow hard as stone
\n and the surface of the deep congeals?<\/p>\n
