The principal liturgies for these days, from tonight&#8217;s Mass through to the Easter Vigil, are really one continuous liturgy, with the Entrance Rites on Thursday night and the final Recessional at the dawn of Easter.<\/p>\n<p>It begins with the evening <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mass_of_the_Lord%27s_Supper\" target=\"_new\">Mass of the Lord&#8217;s Supper<\/a>. Passover is celebrated in the evening.<\/p>\n<p>A rite particular to this Mass is the &#8220;Washing of the Feet&#8221;, where the priest washes the feet of twelve men of the Parish, recalling Christ washing the feet of the Apostles at the Last Supper (John 13:1-15). I have always found this particular rite a touching moment of simple humility.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Gifts for the poor, especially those collected during Lent as the fruit of penance, may be presented in the offertory procession while the people sing <em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ubi_caritas\" target=\"_new\">Ubi caritas est vera<\/a><\/em>.&#8221;  (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.catholicliturgy.com\/index.cfm\/FuseAction\/documentText\/Index\/2\/SubIndex\/38\/ContentIndex\/324\/Start\/319\" target=\"_new\">source<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>There are any number of musical versions of this great text.<\/p>\n<p>This is the version we typically sing: <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/QNvanA1Q0Ew\" target=\"_new\">http:\/\/youtu.be\/QNvanA1Q0Ew<\/a> (sorry, no embedding)<\/p>\n<p>This is the Taiz\u00e9 version, which we&#8217;ve also sung, though it is only the antiphon:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" width=\"480\" height=\"390\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/X9e_QO1ATho\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This is the Choir of King&#8217;s College, Cambridge, singing Durufl\u00e9&#8217;s magnificent polyphony setting:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" width=\"480\" height=\"390\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KwR_dM-1MlU\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>After the Communion Prayer, there is no final blessing. The Holy Eucharist is carried in procession through Church and then transferred into a place of reposition, in our case the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Altar_of_Our_Lady\" target=\"_new\">Lady Altar<\/a>. We chant Saint Thomas Aquinas&#8217; great hymn <em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pange_Lingua_Gloriosi_Corporis_Mysterium\" target=\"_new\">Pange Lingua<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" width=\"640\" height=\"390\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-RH1qa4QjFM\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>After the Mass, it&#8217;s back to Gethsemane. The altar is stripped bare, crosses are removed or covered, and the church is open for silent adoration, to answer Christ&#8217;s invitation &#8220;Could you not, then, watch one hour with me?&#8221; (Matt 26:40) <\/p>\n<p>In short, this is the beginning of the high holy days of the year. Mass begins at 6:30.<\/p>\n<p>As a side note, I&#8217;m currently offering up to the Lord an exquisite pain in my right shoulder due to a pinched nerve.
