\nM<\/span>arch 25 is the usual date for the great feast of the Annunciation <\/a>of Gabriel to Mary, but it is transferred to the Monday after the Easter Octave whenever it falls within Holy Week.<\/p>\n

Very rarely, Good Friday – the date of Our Lord\u2019s Crucifixion – is also on March 25.<\/p>\n

Conception and death, all in one day. This is, of course, the actual reason<\/a> that the Annunciation is celebrated on this day at all.<\/p>\n

How rare is the coinciding of these dates? <\/p>\n

It happened only three times in the 20th century (1910, 1921, and 1932), and twice in the 21st century (2005 – the year of my baptism – and today, in 2016).<\/p>\n

After today, it will not occur again for more than a century.<\/p>\n

When these dates coincided in 1608, John Donne<\/a> was sufficiently moved to write the poem I now share with you.<\/p>\n

Upon the Annunciation and Passion Falling upon One Day<\/em>
\n<\/strong>
\nTamely, frail body, abstain today; today
\nMy soul eats twice, Christ hither and away.
\nShe sees Him man, so like God made in this,
\nThat of them both a circle emblem is,
\nWhose first and last concur; this doubtful day
\nOf feast or fast, Christ came and went away;
\nShe sees Him nothing twice at once, who\u2019s all;
\nShe sees a Cedar plant itself and fall,
\nHer Maker put to making, and the head
\nOf life at once not yet alive yet dead;
\nShe sees at once the virgin mother stay
\nReclused at home, public at Golgotha;
\nSad and rejoiced she\u2019s seen at once, and seen
\nAt almost fifty and at scarce fifteen;
\nAt once a Son is promised her, and gone;
\nGabriel gives Christ to her, He her to John;
\nNot fully a mother, she\u2019s in orbity,
\nAt once receiver and the legacy;
\nAll this, and all between, this day hath shown,
\nThe abridgement of Christ\u2019s story, which makes one
\n(As in plain maps, the furthest west is east)
\nOf the Angels\u2019 Ave and Consummatum est.
\nHow well the Church, God\u2019s court of faculties,
\nDeals in some times and seldom joining these!
\nAs by the self-fixed Pole we never do
\nDirect our course, but the next star thereto,
\nWhich shows where the other is and which we say
\n(Because it strays not far) doth never stray,
\nSo God by His Church, nearest to Him, we know
\nAnd stand firm, if we by her motion go;
\nHis Spirit, as His fiery pillar doth
\nLead, and His Church, as cloud, to one end both.
\nThis Church, by letting these days join, hath shown
\nDeath and conception in mankind is one:
\nOr \u2018twas in Him the same humility
\nThat He would be a man and leave to be:
\nOr as creation He had made, as God,
\nWith the last judgment but one period,
\nHis imitating Spouse would join in one
\nManhood\u2019s extremes: He shall come, He is gone:
\nOr as though the least of His pains, deeds, or words,
\nWould busy a life, she all this day affords;
\nThis treasure then, in gross, my soul uplay,
