Ali has lagged behind out of sight, and Cliff has pushed ahead, not wanting to stay still for long.<\/p>\n<p>The terrain is still hilly, but fewer forests. He&#8217;s been having some knee issues, so he&#8217;s been moving slow but steady. <\/p>\n<p>[He shared some honey with us on the road yesterday before Zubiri &#8211; &#8220;Brazilian bees best in world!&#8221;] <\/p>\n<p>Cliff surprised us all by entering the city before us. Eamon, Ali, and I entered together.<\/p>\n<p>Feet hurt. To be expected.<\/p>\n<p>On Carlos&#8217; suggestion, we are at the Albergue de Jes\u00fas y Mar\u00eda. This is a new, modern facility built inside the old Jesuit seminary, right in the center of the old city. Showered, but will wait for tomorrow for laundry.<\/p>\n<p>No word from Kristof.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"drop\">Terrain today was hilly and muddy with lots of industrial, followed by a bit of bucolic countryside, and then the town of Villava, which seemlessly blended into Pamplona.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"drop\">This afternoon, Eamon and I took a slight detour to see the medieval church of San Esteban in Zabaldika. It was a steep climb up the hill to the church, but the church itself was a spiritual gem. <\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1781\" style=\"width: 775px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thomryng.com\/camino\/2014\/04\/03\/one-year-ago-pamplona\/8665131109_84d7e937e4_b\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1781\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thomryng.com\/camino\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/8665131109_84d7e937e4_b.jpg?resize=765%2C1024\" alt=\"San Esteban in Zabaldika\" width=\"765\" height=\"1024\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1781\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">San Esteban in Zabaldika<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The church is very tiny inside and obviously built for defense &#8211; the steeple has tightly spiraled stone steps and arrow slits &#8211; the interior altars and furnishing were nevertheless exquisite. They also handed us an information sheet and a prayer sheet, which were very welcome.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1784\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thomryng.com\/camino\/2014\/04\/03\/one-year-ago-pamplona\/8678319700_da6a8ecc6d_b\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1784\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thomryng.com\/camino\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/8678319700_da6a8ecc6d_b.jpg?resize=860%2C642\" alt=\"The Bells of San Esteban\" width=\"860\" height=\"642\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1784\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Bells of San Esteban<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>After this excursion, Eamon and I caught up with Ali and Carlos, who had both been behind us.<\/p>\n<p>That hour or so detour was easily the most important part of the day for me in terms of just sitting and praying and being intensely mindful of the Communion of Saints. She is young and nervous, and a dutiful daughter to her widowed mother.
