\"Saint<\/a>
\nO<\/span>n Earth Day, I’m reminded of the great Canticle of the Sun<\/em>, written by Saint Francis of Assissi in about 1224. It is, of course, this verse that comes to mind:<\/p>\n

\nWe praise You, Lord, for Sister Earth,
\nwho sustains us
\nwith her fruits, colored flowers, and herbs.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Although it’s now known as Canticle of the Sun<\/em>, the author’s original title was Laudes Creaturarum<\/em>, which means Song of the Creatures<\/em>. <\/p>\n

“Creatures” is, I think, meant in the original meaning of “something that has been created” rather than the current meaning of “critters”.<\/p>\n

Here it is in full:<\/p>\n

Most High, all-powerful, all-good Lord,
\nAll praise is Yours, all glory, honor and blessings.
\nTo you alone, Most High, do they belong;
\nno mortal lips are worthy to pronounce Your Name.<\/p>\n

We praise You, Lord, for all Your creatures,
\nespecially for Brother Sun,
\nwho is the day through whom You give us light.
\nAnd he is beautiful and radiant with great splendor,
\nof You Most High, he bears your likeness.<\/p>\n

We praise You, Lord, for Sister Moon and the stars,
\nin the heavens you have made them bright, precious and fair.<\/p>\n

We praise You, Lord, for Brothers Wind and Air,
\nfair and stormy, all weather’s moods,
\nby which You cherish all that You have made.<\/p>\n

We praise You, Lord, for Sister Water,
\nso useful, humble, precious and pure.<\/p>\n

We praise You, Lord, for Brother Fire,
\nthrough whom You light the night.
\nHe is beautiful, playful, robust, and strong.<\/p>\n

We praise You, Lord, for Sister Earth,
\nwho sustains us
\nwith her fruits, colored flowers, and herbs.<\/p>\n

We praise You, Lord, for those who pardon,
\nfor love of You bear sickness and trial.
\nBlessed are those who endure in peace,
\nby You Most High, they will be crowned.<\/p>\n

We praise You, Lord, for Sister Death,
\nfrom whom no-one living can escape.
\nWoe to those who die in their sins!
\nBlessed are those that She finds doing Your Will.
\nNo second death can do them harm. <\/p>\n

We praise and bless You, Lord, and give You thanks,
\nand serve You in all humility.
