The idea of walking towards the passion is still very much in evidence.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"drop\">By your help, we beseech you, Lord our God,<br \/>\nmay we walk eagerly in that same charity<br \/>\nwith which, out of love for the world,<br \/>\nyour Son handed himself over to death.<\/p>\n<p>(<em>Collect<\/em> for the Fifth Sunday of Lent)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This week, we enter even more strongly into the desert with Christ. The images in our churches are veiled, and our liturgies begin to focus on the Lord&#8217;s Passion.<\/p>\n<p>The custom of veiling the images is relatively modern, dating back to about the 17th century or so. These veils remain until Easter.<\/p>\n<p>When I say &#8220;modern&#8221;, of course, I mean as applying to the Universal Church. In various localities, the veiling was practiced as early as the 9th Century. The enemy harasses me on every front, and God knows I have often failed in my resolutions and my practice of the virtues.<\/p>\n<p>When a wise monk was asked what it was that monks do, he replied with a shrug, &#8220;we fall down; we get up&#8221;. Just so.<\/p>\n<p>We are in constant need of God&#8217;s infinite mercy. Scripture tells us that God is a just judge (<em>cf<\/em>. especially Psalms 7 and 93 (94)). I <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thomryng.com\/amateurmonk\/a-matter-of-devotion\/\" target=\"_blank\">pray every day<\/a> that He will not be just with me, but merciful. <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"drop\">Have mercy on me, O God, *<br \/>\naccording to Thy great mercy;<br \/>\nAnd according to the bounty of Thy mercies *<br \/>\nblot out my guilt.<\/p>\n<p>Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, *<br \/>\nand cleanse me from my sin.<br \/>\nFor I acknowledge my guilt, *<br \/>\nand my sin is always before me&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be cleansed; *<br \/>\nwash me, and I shall be made whiter than snow. <\/p>\n<p>To mine ear give joy again and gladness; *<br \/>\nand let my humbled bones again rejoice. <\/p>\n<p><em>from Psalm 50 (51)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A week ago we celebrated L\u00e6tare Sunday, a burst of joy in the midst of Lent.
