They are the events in the life of the Blessed Virgin where the sword of sorrow pierced her heart.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">S<\/span>imeon<\/em> blessed them and said to Mary his mother, &#8220;Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is spoken against (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), that thoughts out of many hearts may be revealed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>(Luke 2:34-35) <\/em>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There are numerous <a href=\"http:\/\/www.catholictradition.org\/Mary\/7sorrows.htm\" devotions that hearken back to these sorrows, in both the Western and Eastern traditions, including especially the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marian.org\/mary\/prayers\/sorrows.php\" target=\"_blank\">Chaplet of the Seven Sorrows<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>And of course, the traditional imagery of the Seven Sorrows, physically depicting a sword (or seven!) piercing the Blessed Virgin&#8217;s heart, can be quite arresting.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thomryng.com\/amateurmonk\/friday-of-sorrows-of-the-blessed-virgin-2016\/7_sorrows_of_bvm\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-87078\"><img \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m struck that Mary&#8217;s Seven Sorrows bookend Christ&#8217;s life, all occurring when He was a child, or at His passion and death.
