\nL<\/span>ent is a new beginning, a path leading to the certain goal of Easter, Christ\u2019s victory over death. This season urgently calls us to conversion. Christians are asked to return to God \u201cwith all their hearts\u201d (Joel 2:12), to refuse to settle for mediocrity and to grow in friendship with the Lord. Jesus is the faithful friend who never abandons us. Even when we sin, he patiently awaits our return; by that patient expectation, he shows us his readiness to forgive. Lent is a favorable season for deepening our spiritual life through the means of sanctification offered us by the Church: fasting, prayer and almsgiving. At the basis of everything is the word of God, which during this season we are invited to hear and ponder more deeply.<\/p>\n

Regulations for Fast and Abstinence<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ash Wednesday, February 14, 2018<\/strong>, and Good Friday, March 30, 2018<\/strong>, are days of fast and abstinence. Fridays of Lent<\/strong> are also days of abstinence. <\/p>\n

Fasting<\/em> is to be observed by all eighteen years of age and older, who have not yet celebrated their sixtieth birthday. On a fast day one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one\u2019s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and juices, are allowed.<\/p>\n

Abstinence<\/em> is observed by all fourteen years of age and older. On days of abstinence no meat is allowed. Note that when health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. When in doubt concerning fast and abstinence, the parish priest should be consulted.<\/p>\n

Fasting, almsgiving, and prayer are the three traditional disciplines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens should undertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance and of preparation for Baptism or of renewal of Baptism at Easter.
