They had some criteria:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Therefore, it is necessary that one of the men<br \/>who accompanied us the whole time<br \/>the Lord Jesus came and went among us,<br \/>beginning from the baptism of John<br \/>until the day on which he was taken up from us,<br \/>become with us a witness to his resurrection.<\/p><p><em>(Acts 1:21 &#8211; 22)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They narrowed it down to two men, &#8220;Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also known as Justus&#8221; and Matthias.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then they prayed, &#8220;Lord, you know everyone&#8217;s heart. He&#8217;s sort of the poster child unexpected callings from the Lord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So on today&#8217;s feast of Saint Matthias, keep an ear out for what the Holy Spirit is calling you to &#8211; because you never really know what that might be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tradition holds that Matthias preached the Gospel in what is now modern-day Georgia before being crucified, possibly in the Roman garrison town of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gonio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Apsaros<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And as for the other guy with his three names? Nobody&#8217;s really sure, though be may have been martyred in the Emperor Vespasian&#8217;s slaughter of the Jews of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eleutheropolis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Betaris<\/a> in AD 68.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After the suicide of Judas Iscariot, the remaining Apostles gathered to choose another to replace him.
