The town was founded by the Romans as <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Varea\" target=\"_blank\">Varea<\/a><\/em>, probably in the early first century, though the area was probably <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ciudad_de_Cantabria\" target=\"_blank\">inhabited during the Iron Age<\/a>. It prospered during the Medieval Era, before becoming a point of contention between the Kingdoms of Navarra and Castile, often involving siege engines.
