A<\/span>t the top of the ridge, from the monumental statue of the Virgin Mary<\/a>, you get your first glimpse of the town of Espalion<\/a>, below. The town itself hugs the River Lot, but towering above it is the ruins of the medieval Ch\u00e2teau de Calmont d’Olt<\/a>. This has been a fortified position since at least the 9th century, and it was only abandoned in the 17th century, gradually falling into ruin. The town is my lunchtime destination. Mind you, when I took this photo it was just after eight in the morning, so perhaps second breakfast would be more accurate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
