Exactly when this area was first settled is a bit of a mystery. Evidence of humans here dates as far back as the Middle Neolithic. The Gauls had settlements in the area, if not exactly on this site. A Roman road crossed the river here, but evidence for permanent habitation is disputed. What is undisputed is that the Franks established a monastery at this site in 753, and Pope Stephen II himself dedicated the church two years later. It was a thriving Medieval settlement, and this might be why you see things like this in the city: a tobacconist/bar/café with a stone turret.

Date: 29 August 2023
Place: Figeac, Lot Département, Region of Occitanie, France

Maps!

Figeac is an ancient settlement; that much is clear.
