A<\/span>fter sitting for my portrait, I took this photo of\u00a0La place des \u00c9critures<\/a><\/em>. As I mentioned the other day<\/a>, Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Champollion<\/a> was a native of Figeac. He famously cracked the code on the Rosetta Stone<\/a> and successfully translated Egyptian hieroglyphics for the first time. There\u2019s a museum here dedicated to him and his work, and there is also\u00a0La place des \u00c9critures<\/em>, which contains, embedded in the floor of the square, a giant reproduction of the Rosetta Stone carved in black granite. And this is what it looks like on the rare occasions when there aren’t people standing (or sitting) on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
