I<\/span> hesitate to call the Rue de la Citadelle the main street of Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, but it is the street that the Camino takes through the town. Most of the buildings date to the mid-18th century, and many of them have the date carved in the stone lintel above their front doors. The citadel itself looms over the little town – it’s actually some distance behind us and to the left from the vantage of this photo.<\/p>\n

The street is crowded with houses and the occasional restaurant or shop catering to pilgrims. There are also a number of pilgrim hostels – including ours – and the pilgrim office where you can get your first stamp on your credencial. <\/p>\n

The street curves, so you can’t really see where runs past the little Gothic church of Notre-Dame-du-Bout-du-Pont, which stands at the foot of the old bridge across the River Nive.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
