{"id":4320,"date":"2016-11-02T08:08:28","date_gmt":"2016-11-02T15:08:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thomryng.com\/camino\/?p=4320"},"modified":"2016-10-31T10:37:07","modified_gmt":"2016-10-31T17:37:07","slug":"camino-photo-of-the-day-irache-monastery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thomryng.com\/camino\/camino-photo-of-the-day-irache-monastery\/","title":{"rendered":"Camino Photo of the Day: Irache Monastery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">F<\/span>or All Souls Day, the Day of the Dead, it is perhaps appropriate that today&#8217;s photo is the entrance to the sadly defunct <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Monastery_of_Irache\" target=\"_blank\">Irache Monastery<\/a>. The structure is directly across from the wine fountain and dates to the middle ages. In addition to being a spiritual center and a pilgrim&#8217;s hostel, it was once an important center of learning, containing a Pontifical University no less. The university was shuttered in 1824 as part of Spain&#8217;s anti-clericalist phase, and the last monks left in 1839. Since then, it&#8217;s been used as a school and a hospital. Rumour has it that the current owners are planning to turn it into a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Parador\" target=\"_blank\">parador<\/a>.
