We knew we wouldn’t have much time, but we ducked into the Cathedral itself to visit the saint. His story resonates pretty strongly with me. I won’t bore you with the details (that’s what Wikipedia is for), but here’s the core: he thought God was calling him to be a monk. He tried to gain admittance to two different monasteries, and they both sent him away. Instead, he found his mission for the people of God in a totally different place. He started by building a bridge for pilgrims at the site of the city that now bears his name. Then he spent the rest of his life working on the Camino, making it a true road by cutting trees, building embankments and causeways, and tamping flat the earth.

Santo Domingo de la Calzada, pray for us who have recourse to you.

Date: 09 April 2016
Place: Santo Domingo de la Calzada (La Rioja, Spain)

The Cathedral square of the town of Santo Domingo de la Calzada was crowded with Confirmands and their families and godparents.
