His real name was Rodrigo D\u00edaz de Vivar, and he lived from about 1040 to 1099. He received his nickname from the Moors, probably from the original Arabic <em>al-Sayyid<\/em> meaning <em>The Master<\/em> (Doctor Who fans take note). The heroic and tragic songs and stories of his life pale against his actual exploits.
