C<\/span>omplimenting yesterday’s “not a door<\/a>“, here we come to the actual door next door. As with the mysterious Pope statue, all of these statues are damaged in a way that indicates (to me at least) that somebody was taking pot-shots at them at some point. Who are these statues meant to represent? Well the church across the street is dedicated to Saint James and Saint Peter. I don’t think these statues represent either of those saints, however. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are my guesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the left, with his lantern and book, we most likely have Saint Remigius<\/a> (d. 533). He is usually depicted with a dove as well, but as his right hand is missing, it’s possible it was holding the dove.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the right, with a dog licking his wounded leg, we have Saint Roch<\/a> (d. 1327). He’s a popular saint on the Camino, so this is no surprise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I confess that I’m stumped about the saint in the place of honour, though. The wings probably indicate an angel. However, there is an unusual Russian icon of Christ<\/a> where He is shown beardless with wings, long hair, and crossed arms. I’ll have to go back and ask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
