T<\/span>his bridge over the R\u00edo Arga lends its name to the town: Puente la Reina, the Queen’s Bridge<\/em>. But which queen? The most common story is that it is named for\u00a0Queen Muniadona<\/a>, wife of\u00a0King Sancho III<\/a>\u00a0of Navarra. She reportedly ordered the construction of the bridge for the use of pilgrims. However, other stories credit\u00a0Queen Estefania<\/a>, wife of\u00a0King Garc\u00eda S\u00e1nchez III<\/a>. Personally, I think the answer is much more obvious. When the bridge was originally built, an alcove in one of the center pilings held a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary. I\u2019m pretty sure the bridge \u2013 and therefore the town \u2013 was originally named after her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
