He is there identified as the patron saint of the Camino in Navarra. He was born in about the year 1020, and was abbot of the monastery of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Santa Mar\u00eda la Real de Irache (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thomryng.com\/camino\/camino-photo-of-the-day-irache-monastery\/\" target=\"_blank\">Santa Mar\u00eda la Real de Irache<\/a> from 1052 until his death in 1092. He was a staunch defender of the ancient Mozarabic rite, and he famously extended hospitality to pilgrims, which apparently included the very first fountain of wine on the Camino.
