The tympanum (that&#8217;s the bit over the doors) depicts Christ the Teacher enthroned, a favourite of early medieval Christian art in both the East and West. He is surrounded by the symbols of the four Evangelists and, flanking them, are the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint John. This means, of course, that Saint John is depicted <em>twice<\/em>: once as himself and once as the eagle symbolizing his Gospel.
