Pilgrims on the Way

Camino Photo of the Day: Citroën Deux Chevaux

In the village I spotted this delightful old Citroën. Once ubiquitous, they seem to be pretty rare today. I suppose that’s not surprising since they haven’t been manufactured since 1990. Famously called the Deux Chevaux, meaning “two horses”, in reference to its two-cylinder engine, this was very much a cheap car in every sense of the word. It was inexpensive and cheaply made. I remember seeing one back when I was a teen that had what appeared to be lawn furniture as the driver and passenger seats. It was also surprisingly rugged. It had been designed for France’s often muddy and unpaved rural roads. This led to the car’s other nickname – the canard or “duck” – because it was so light that it floated.
