Pilgrims on the Way

Camino Photo of the Day: the Two Domes of Cahors

The Cathédrale Saint-Étienne de Cahors is an absolute wonder. Medieval paintings decorate many of the walls and columns. The architecture itself is early Gothic, with an overlay of Byzantine elements. I’ve never seen anything quite like it. It has domes amid the Gothic: one is decorated with 14th-century frescoes depicting the stoning of Saint Stephen, as well as eight prophets. The other has no decoration at all, but an electronic system projects images on it in slow rotation.

Maps!

The site I’ve been using for my daily maps, Gronze.com, while otherwise great, unfortunately doesn’t have maps for this variant. So here’s a map from my book Practical Pilgrimage showing the entirety of the three main variants and larger sub-variants. I walked the GR6 from Figeac to Rocamadour and the GR46 on to Cahors.
