Camino Photo of the Day: a Treacherous Descent

The next morning, after a bitterly cold night, we left town without breakfast – absolutely nothing in this eerily empty town was open. The road out of Riego de Ambrós begins with this scramble downhill on what appears to be exposed granite. It’s slippery when wet. In fact, I was a little woozy from a bad sleep and no food, and I lost my footing at one point and had a bit of a tumble. As soon as I felt my feet slipping, I did the usual stabilizing effort with my walking stick, but on this ground it found no purchase. So I threw myself backward on the theory that my backpack would cushion my fall. Got some bruises, but I escaped any serious injury.
