Camino Photo of the Day: Descending from the Citadel

After exploring the town a bit, Francine and I climbed up to the old citadel that looms over Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port. The original medieval castle was knocked down in one of the innumerable border skirmishes between France and Spain in the Renaissance era. The current structure was built in the seventeenth century using the very latest in modern anti-cannon design.

Nowadays, the very center of the structure is a school, complete with basketball courts in the moat. You can still walk and explore the outer walls and bastions, and they afford a magnificent view of the town and the surrounding countryside.

This photo was taken when we were about halfway down on our way back into town.
