Camino Photo of the Day: La Reja Dorada

The Bodegas La Reja Dorada is one of the many historical buildings on the Calle de Ruavieja in Logroño. It may not look like much, but it’s been a bodega since 1555. According to the sign, which you can see on the left of the building, La Reja Dorada houses the wine cellar of the family of Doña María Jacinta Martínez de Sicilia y Santa Cruz. Her husband, General Baldomero Espartero, was Regent of Spain under Queen Isabella II. The bodega remained in operation until “recent times”, and inside it still contains the wine press and other winemaking equipment. Apparently, the depth and proximity of the river (it’s right behind the building!) and a special ventilation system made this an ideal bodega. For more than four centuries.
