Camino Photo of the Day: Purgatory

This painting may be found in the little church of San Paio. I suspect that it’s a vision of purgatory, probably with some local persons depicted. The idea of these images is often to provide a stark reminder to pray for our beloved dead. What a far cry this is from modern days, where people are often lauded as saints during their funeral Mass. When I die, I want the priest to preach on the Four Last Things and to entreat those present to pray for me. I suspect I’m going to need all the prayers I can get. Of course, for those on Camino, their symbolic purgatory will soon end at the glory of Santiago.
