Camino Photo of the Day: Santa María de Viana

Yesterday I told the story of the death of Cesare Borgia. This is the façade of the Iglesia de Santa María de Viana where he is buried. We arrived just as Mass was letting out. Shortly after this photo was taken, Patrick and I went up to the open doors of the church to look for the tomb and to pray a bit. Just as we got to the door, a fellow came up to the door, wagged his finger at us and shouted. Then he closed and locked the door. This is a scene I will never forget. It would be three years before I got to see the tomb, with its nearby inscription “Here in a scant piece of earth lies he whom all the world feared”.
