Pilgrims on the Way

The Camino has more than its share of graffiti. Some is poetic. Some is artistic. Some is just plain incomprehensible. Most of it, though, is encouraging. You got this! Date: 22 April 2016 Place: Between El Acebo and Riego de Ambrós (Castilla y León, Spain) Today’s map!

As we leave El Acebo, the Camino has a wacky jog through some local roads. This was the sight that greeted us. In the distance, you can see the valley of El Bierzo and the mountains and blue skies beyond. In any other year, we would be approaching the rainy portion of our Camino. This year, though, the worst of […]

We had a lovely late lunch in El Acebo. We ran into Rebecca again; she had injured her knee coming down the goat path and had called it a day here. Francine and I discussed options for the night and took the least-bad option of staggering another 5km to Riego. This region of Spain shows its Catholicism more than some […]

We enter the charming village of El Acebo at last! Not only are we in a new town, we’re actually in a new region as well. We are now in the traditional cultural region of El Bierzo, which is also an administrative area within the Province of León. As anybody who has scrambled down the goat path can attest, the […]

We trundle down the goat path towards the village of El Acebo. The rain has stopped and the weather is beautiful. The path is steep and rocky, but the end is in sight! And by “end”, I of course mean “a late lunch”. Date: 22 April 2016 Place: Approaching El Acebo de San Miguel (Castilla y León, Spain) Today’s map!

Here Francine descends the infamous “goat path” down into El Acebo. It’s steeper and slipperier than you might think. Looking at the Google map of the area, I’ve now realized that there is an alternate route, walking along a highway with narrow shoulders. It’s a lot longer, as there appear to be a couple of switchbacks. Really a toss-up which […]

Here we stand at the top of the steep descent into the village of El Acebo, a path that Francine lovingly refers to as “the goat path”. It starts out winding and rocky and progresses by steeper stages until it’s practically a scramble. You have to take this path in a slow and methodical way, or you’ll certainly twist an […]

No explanation helpful or necessary. Date: 22 April 2016 Place: Between Manjarín and El Acebo de San Miguel (Castilla y León, Spain) Today’s map!

The Camino continues to wind through the foothills, giving us some spectacular views of the valleys below. On our 2013 Camino, this was the spot where I ran into a fellow who had walked the last 100 km of the Camino with his son, and then after arriving in Santiago took a train and taxi to Saint Jean Pied-de-Port and […]

Francine has just spotted the only toilet in Manjarín, across the road from the albergue. Really, the less said about this, the better. Let’s just say that we’ll never be staying in the Refugio de Manjarín and leave it at that. Date: 22 April 2016 Place: Manjarín (Castilla y León, Spain) Today’s map!
