Camino Photo of the Day: Alphonso y Bernardo

This monument just before the city of Sahagún is said to mark the halfway point on the Camino in Spain, from Roncesvalles to Santiago de Compostela. Today’s photo is a rare montage, cheesy postcard style. On the left we have  Bernardo de Sedirac (d. 1128?) who founded the local Cluniac abbey and became Primate of Spain, and on the right is King Alfonso VI “the Brave” of León and Castile (1047-1109) who founded the nearby city of Sahagún.

There was some work being done to the grounds surrounding the monument when we visited in 2013. By 2016, it looked very different, with the grass cleaned up and a new path through the statues in place.

Date: 17 April 2013
Place:
between San Nicolás del Reál Camino (Province of Palencia, Castilla y León, Spain) and Sahagún (Province of León, Castilla y León, Spain)
Today started: Terradillos de los Templarios (Province of Palencia, Castilla y León, Spain)
