League of the Fangaerian City States

The Fangaerian City States are the center of the civilized world. Really.

Government

The League is a confederation of seven self-governing Provinces (or Fretera in Old Forcuran), each of which sends a representative to the capital city of Fangaerie to sit on the Council of Seven, and a variable number of Senators, based on a complicated formula understood by few. The League’s government deals mostly with matters of trade, development, and foreign relations, leaving most internal matters to the individual Provinces

The Senate (in Old Forcuran, the Binparta) is the League’s legislative body. It sets policies for the League as a whole.

The Council of Seven is the League’s executive authority, and it manages a small but efficient bureaucracy to carry out its wishes. In times of war or crisis, the Council appoints a Chancellor to lead them. The resurgence of the Southern Orc League recently prompted the Council to appoint Lord Traetian Sagavaar of Fangaerie as Chancellor.

History

This region first became significant during the rise of the Raagean Empire, when the imperial capital was temporarily located in the city of Fangaerie. Though those days are long gone, there are many who dream of glory and empire within the League. Occasionally these people are chosen Chancellor. That rarely turns out well.

After the Empire’s retreat from the Eder Soult, the Haagan and Forcuran peoples who lived in this area formed numerous petty kingdoms, which often clashed violently over land and privilege. The surviving nations from this period of strife banded together to form the Haagan League in 51 TR in an effort to respulse the Orkin Menace.

  • 175 TR: Present day.
  • 158 TR: Ahk’Tang negotiates the Frandorian Truce in which the Haagans give up the west bank of the Fargruss Valley and the orcs “promise” not to enter the Frandor Mountains.
  • 152 TR: The Great Orkin Reprisal. Orkryn Phar’Mos invades the Tan’Gra River Valley and the Dwarven Clans of Praxter.
  • 64 TR: Hell’s Throat War ends.
  • 58 TR: Construction begins of Frandor’s Keep.
  • 56 TR: The Battle of Hell’s Throat. After a third orc invasion, an alliance between the Meletian Kingdom and the City States of Fangaerie is formed. For the first time, the humans take the battle to the orcs on their own ground. An expeditionary force moves up the mountain pass of Hell’s Throat, the invasion route favored by the Orcs, and sweeps it clean.
  • 51 TR: The Haagan League is founded in an attempt to push the orcs back. Binparta first convenes. Lord Flataroy is elected chancellor. The Council of Seven set about building a combined army to repel the orcs and secure the Borderlands.
  • 46 TR: The Great Purge: Praxter dwarves drive the many orc tribes raiding their lands (which they call the Orkin Menace) east through Hell’s Throat into the Sustain Valley.

The Seven Provinces

The name “Haagan League” is most popular with Haagan traditionalists, especially in the northern and western fretera of Barsuk, Point Artal, and Varturus. The term “Seven Sisters” or “Fangaerian City States” is more commonly used in the more “civilized” south and east.

  • County of Agarsta (east) – 7 Senators – Councillor Symy Diododa
  • Duchy of Arz (south) – 9 Senators – Councillor Talan Burnstump
  • Grand Duchy of Barsuk (north) – 7 Senators – Councillor Reginald Cartwright
  • County of Caldinstar (northeast) – 7 Senators – Councillor Niptler Ewino
  • Free City of Fangaerie (southeast) – 13 Senators – Chancellor Traetian Sagavaar
  • Free City of Point Artal (southwest) – 9 Senators – Councillor Iva Kionnen
  • Duchy of Varturus (west) – 7 Senators – Councillor Attal Penfire

The Seven Sisters have an active political climate, especially tensions between the Binparta and the Chancellor. Furthermore, the Binparta is not united, and several groups operate within it to further their own goals. The most prominent of these are the Sons of Battle, the Bust Keg Society and the Brotherhood of the Scar.
