Duchy of Arz

Duke Bihan Archimon III of Arz is the second cousin of the previous Duke. Most of House Archimon were killed during the Orcish invasions.

The Duchy was completely overrun during the Orcish invasions. Once the war was over, resettlement was haphazard at best, and Arz now includes more multi-racial villages than anywhere else in the City States.

The other result of the resettlement was the obliteration of the traditional Arzian feudal lords. Those Houses that still existed settled in and near the city, and the Duke was free to establish a system of shires, forests, and cantons under Ducal control.

The Duchy is primarily divided into shires and forests administered by sheriffs and foresters respectively: Alderondus Shire, Farzyshire, Giltshire, Stolyshire, Caitmore Forest. The area immediately around the city of Arz is not part of any shire, but is called the Duke’s Demense, sometimes called “Dukeshire”.

The shires and the Duke’s Demense are further divided into cantons administered by a reeve. The cantons more or less correspond to the various towns and villages.

Even twenty years after the war, Arz remains a militarized state, with a well-organized army and a series of castles guarding the approaches into the Duchy itself and especially into the fertile land north of the city.
