Portrait in Passing

by Dumbarton Oakes

“…So, Fletch — you never met Fletch, Benyar bless his soul — Fletch pushes the guy out the window, And — while he’s falling — I set him on fire! It was beautiful. Ha, ha, hahaha!”

“Anyway, where was I? Seriously — where was I? Have I been here for a while? If anybody asks, are you an alibi? My memory plays tricks on me, y’kmow?”

“But, to answer your question, we’re living in a manor just outside of that big fort — I forget the name. My memory plays tricks on me, y’kmow? We’re training some new fighters, adepts, acolytes to Benyar….”

“Benyar? Big god from out of town. He’s new in these parts, but he’s catching on fast. I’ll leave you a pamphlet. Get in on it early, man!”

“Oh, look, those are my friends; I gotta go. Thanks for the drink. Hey, watch my hand for a minute, okay?”

“I was here all night. We talked all night. You’re my alibi. Repeat that back to me.”

“Perfect. Hey, nice meeting you, man. Get home safe, okay? G’night!”
